One of the biggest culture challenges I have noticed at the clinical site I am shadowing at is the disconnect between employees. Getting the employees to get along with each other has been extremely difficult for the management team, and because of this, implementing new changes has proven to be just as difficult. The staff members tend to go off on their own and attempt to make sitewide changes individually. This eliminates teamwork and creates disconnect between staff, management, and patients. Many of the staff members do not fully understand that in order to create change, they need to work together. They think that if individually they make the changes that are being implemented, it does not matter if they work together as a team because they are doing what needs to be done on their own. This creates a culture that results in tension and poor teamwork. This has a negative effect on patient care. Evidence-based practice relies on teamwork and collaboration. Without this, you do not have a department that works as a team, but individual employees trying to create change on their own. Departments require teamwork and so does evidence-based practice.
