Nursing Health and nutrition case study Weight Management Case Study: Diet and Weight Loss Owen is quite good at losing weight. He has lost 200 lb in the past 8 years. However, he is not 200 lb lighter than he used to be: He has lost approximately 40 lb five different times, only to gain the weight back again. At different times, he has followed the Atkins diet and the Dean Ornish plan, substituted diet supplement drinks for two meals a day, fasted 3 days a week, and restricted his diet to only a few foods. He usually can lose 3 to 4 lb a week when he really tries. He feels good when he reaches his goal of 180 lb, but he always gains the weight back when he stops dieting. Now, once again, he is back at his heaviest weight, 220 lb. He usually skips breakfast. Mornings are busy anyway, and this seems like a good way to save calories. He finds eating a moderate lunch (usually a sandwich) and dinner to be easy. However, later in the evening he starts snacking while he watches television and has a difficult time stopping. His favorite snacks are ice cream, chips, and cookies. Discussion questions: • Owen is 5 feet, 11 inches tall. What is his ideal body weight range? Is Owen’s goal weight appropriate? • Why does Owen always regain weight after he stops dieting? • Suggest some ways Owen could change his eating habits to help him lose weight. 1.
