Module 3 Discussion – Case Study – Professional Conduct Purpose Professional conduct is behaviors and traits that are expected by the standards of the health profession. There are many different health careers and each has their own models and standards based on that profession. The 2 major areas that are addressed when discussing traits and features of a profession are hard skills and soft skills. A “hard skill” is specific technical training for a specific health career in which someone has met the minimum proficiencies to do the job. Examples include: performing CPR, performing a bed bath on a resident or patient, or performing a venipuncture. “Soft skills” are traits that include defining qualities or behaviors that showcase interactions, job performance, and career prospects. There are not different standards in each profession when discussing soft skills. Examples include: showing respect, being dependable, being trustworthy, and respecting confidentiality. The town is known for everyone knowing everyone with a population of only 2500. Elena was the only employee in the laboratory when there was an outpatient who arrived with lab orders that required a blood draw. Of course, Elena knew Lavina Graber from school, as they had only graduated 1 year apart. Elena collected the lab orders from Lavina while making small talk and catching up. The lab order was for a pregnancy test. Elena was a little surprised by the order, as she didn’t realize that Lavina had been in any sort of relationship, and she didn’t mention anything while they were talking. Elena went ahead with the procedure and took the sample back to the lab for testing. Two days after Lavina had been in the laboratory, Elena ran into Lavina’s parents at the grocery store. Elena greeted them with enthusiasm and congratulated them on becoming new grandparents. Lavina’s parents seemed shocked and confused by this as they had no idea what Elena was talking about. The parents of Lavina politely told Elena that she must have been mistaken, as their only child was not expecting a child. Elena then went on to explain why she was congratulating them and what had transpired at the laboratory with their daughter two days prior.
