At first, his nose was runny and clear but by mid-afternoon, he began coughing up thick mucus described as thick and yellow, and he began to feel feverish. Shortly after, the feeling of breathlessness began, and he decided to come to the emergency department. Greg has experienced 23 respiratory infections a year. He usually tries to wait them out but has been requiring antibiotic treatment more frequently. He has been smoking tobacco cigarettes since he was 18 years old and typically smokes a pack a day. Before feeling ill, he admits to having a nagging smokers cough most days for the past 2 years that is usually productive for thick, white phlegm in the morning.
